As most of you already know, SLOODLE is an Open Source project which integrates the multi-user virtual environment of Second Life® with the Moodle® learning-management system. Paul ‘Fire’ Preibisch, one of the developers of this project, is continuously creating new tools to use sloodle in an interactive way in English classes. As a matter of fact, he has recently released an opensource gameshow for Second Life, where the teachers can create a virtual contest show host for their students in Distance education classes. The Game Show is GPL 3.0, which means it’s totally free! What’s more, it connects to your MOODLE Learning Management Website, and feeds directly into the Gradebook.

Sloodle is not just another tool related to Moodle, but an amazing set of oportunities to integrate moodle with Second Life.

Sloodle is not just another tool related to Moodle, but an amazing set of oportunities to integrate moodle with Second Life. Even though I have not had time to test some of its tools, I can’t deny that they seem to me not just as practical ways to teach, but also funny tools to learn. Sloodle is not merely a bridge between 2D & 3D, but also a way in which students can interact with Second Life world, under the supervision of the teacher, and with the backup of the moodle page if any technical problem comes in the way of the learning process. Furthermore, some of its tools can change a boring-to-the-bones activity into a game or a competition, thus creating a learning space much more appealing to the students (forr instance, the chair contest tool is a great example). Fire Centaur made 2 presentations on Sloodle and its different tools, and he personally adviced me to record the second one because the setting was much more professional. I must admit that the presentation was great, the conference appealing and the tools you can see amazing (some of them, though, might not be that useful … but some others have thound potential uses!). Watch it and see which are the possibilities of these new tools …

ABSTRACT of the CONFERENCE

This demobnstration will show educators how they can use SLOODLE for classroom management – administering quizzes, assignment submittal, and some of SLOODLE 0.4′s new tools including: the Sloodle Presenter, the freemail blogger. If time permits, we will also discuss some of the newer experimental tools in development as well.

In January 2009 the AVALON project was awarded EU funding within the Leonardo da Vinci, Transversal Program. 26 European partners in 8 European countries joined in a development project which will last 2 years. AVALON stands for Access to Virtual and Action Learning live ONline. The partners’ goal is to explore Second Life for scenario based language learning. A brief 10-min presentation about the latest development will lead into a discussion as to what scenario based learning really is and how a course for a ‘mobile worker’ could be designed. The idea about the mobile worker is, for example, that this person would like to live in a target country (for example Iceland) in order to work there. To prepare his departure he starts learning the target language and upon arrival he might be confronted with any of the following situations:

A medical emergency

Looking for a flat

Bureaucratic paperwork

… apart from needing to go shopping, small talk in a pub and other human needs. For these situations, we will design a course in Icelandic and all ideas on how to do this are welcome.

The Bayeux Tapestry is one of the most important Medieval items from the British history (...)

The Bayeux Tapestry, which is in fact an embroidery, is one of the most important Medieval items from the British history. It is not only a representation of the events leading up to the 1066 Norman invasion of England (historically, the last time that England was invaded), but also a beautiful artistic piece which represents the Medieval esthetics, since it was composed soon after these events took place. It disappeared from history until 1417, and then again until 1724. Personally, it should be considered one of the cultural and artistic wonders of the world.

During the conference, we were brought to the SIM Teeslife, where a digital recreation of the Bayeux Tapestry is exposed. You see the digital Tapestry in about life size, so you can use the zoom to have a much larger view. The embroidery method used is known for its ability to create quite a relief effect, which is no more visible than on colour plates. However, it is a recreation which we hope will do a very good job of transporting you to Bayeux and from there back to the Norman Conquest, the lands of England and Normandy and that fateful day on the battlefield of Hastings which changed British history forever. There is also the possibility to listen to an audio guide to the Tapestry. You can listen to the explanations and follow the pictures of the Bayeux Taestry. Don’t miss it!

How student expectations of the above role can change according to what other learning activities they are participating in.

Guidelines for good practice

ABSTRACT

Last Friday-Saturday (May, 8th & 9th) I attended to a conference about the role of the new technologies, and particularly the role of Second Life, in the Education. It was a 24-hour marathon (I just was able to sleep for 4 hours) with more than 30 confenrence at the Edunation SIM in Second Life. I was able to attend to 10 conferences, which I recorded and now I am planning to publish here. I personally think that the conference was a success: There were many presentations with head figures and researchers of the role of new technologies in Education, there were a few workshops (I could only attend to Gavin’s Intro to Scripting … but I will post a small summary of Carolrb’s Making Audio Posters for Vocabulary Practice), there even were some external presentations of different issues (You will be able to see an exhibition of the Bayeux Tapestry). Thanks to Dudeney Ge, time to socialize and dance (some time to relax between conferences) was also possible, since he was the DJ (among many other things). Congratulation to all those who helped and managed to make that conference a real success and somethig I will surely repeat next year.

A través de una conocida serie de televisión gringa (CSI New York S04E05 – Down the Rabbit Hole) conocí un nuevo fenómeno llamado Second Life.

¡A volar! … ¡Teletransportaros!

_ Arte interactivo y arquitectura

P.D.: No me he podido aguantar.
