Simply stated, the cornerstone of Variationist Analysis is observing the variable nature of linguistic phenomena in a natural conversational setting. United in the belief that prescriptive and/or qualitative descriptive investigations of a linguistic variable in a language result in insufficient and perhaps even inaccurate conclusions, variationists constructed this subfield of Sociolinguistics based on the fact that quantitative analysis of linguistic variables can more accurately explain the observed variability in native-speaker discourse, when in tandem with qualitative analysis.
